Castlereagh Borough Council has launched an investigation after a 13-month-old baby girl was rescued after being found face down in a swimming pool.
The child was revived at the scene by a member of staff at the Robinson Centre in Castlereagh on Saturday morning. She was then rushed by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
She was conscious when she arrived at the hospital and was kept in overnight for observation.
It is understood the baby's father was changing another child when she walked from the changing rooms and into the pool area where she fell in.
It is believed the pool was closed to the public at the time.
Castlereagh Borough Council said it has launched a probe into the near drowning.
In a statement, the council said: “Castlereagh Borough Council can confirm that an incident took place at 10.30am on Saturday morning, October 15, at the Robinson Centre, involving the rescue of a 13-month-old girl from a swimming pool.
“The child was treated by staff at the centre before being taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where she was kept in overnight for observation.
“The council has commenced an investigation into the incident.”
Castlereagh Ulster Unionist councillor and East Belfast MLA Michael Copeland said: “My understanding is the child was found face down at the Robinson Centre. The child was removed from the water and was administered to.”
He added: “Castlereagh Borough Council offers exceptionally high standard facilities, and has done for considerably longer than most other councils. Castlereagh council officers and employees take every precaution to protect members of the public when using these facilities.
“On this occasion a very serious incident has occurred and it is being investigated.
“My foremost thoughts are obviously with the child and the child’s family.”
Staff at the Robinson Centre declined to comment when contacted yesterday afternoon by the Belfast Telegraph.
A spokesperson for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust confirmed the child was discharged yesterday morning.
On Castlereagh Borough Council’s website, the Robinson Centre is described as offering “fitness and fun for all the family”.
On the website it says all activities are “fully supervised and can be tailored to meet your needs”.
