A 91-year-old woman has been targeted by thieves during a distraction robbery in Belfast.

The victim had been at home with her 79-year-old neighbour when a woman knocked on her door in the Newton Park area of Four Winds at around 3pm - claiming to have lost her cat.

The unknown caller said she believed the animal was now in the pensioner's back garden.

Moments later another neighbour spotted a man climbing over her rear fence before disappearing around the front of the house.

The victim then discovered her upstairs bedroom had been ransacked and a purse containing cash had been stolen.

Police are appealing for anyone who noticed anything unusual in the area at the time - in particular the movements of a green Nissan Micra.
