A woman has been stabbed to death in Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

The woman was found in Merron Mews at 3.30pm yesterday

A man who had also suffered stab wounds was taken to hospital and is in a serious condition.

Police appealed for information on the incident.

There were renewed calls for tough action against knife crime following the incident.

DUP MLA Lord Morrow condemned the "vicious and brutal incident".

He said: "As a local representative I extend my sympathies to the families involved.

"In recent weeks we have witnessed several stabbings and once again this highlights the need for proper criminal justice policies to be in place.

"Whilst anyone can have access to a knife and it's impossible to remove every knife from society, we must ensure that our criminal justice system has effective policies to deal with this type of crime."

Earlier a man was stabbed in the head and eye in west Belfast.

The victim, in his 20s, was assaulted by several men outside his flat at Lenadoon Avenue.

He was stabbed three times just before 2am. His injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

A woman in her 20s and two men in their 50s and 30s were arrested.
