A rigger puts the finishing touches to the Christmas tree in Victoria Square

Shoppers watched in amazement at Victoria Square yesterday as a touch of engineering ingenuity was used to place a star on Northern Ireland’s tallest Christmas tree.

Rigger Chris Williams abseiled from the dome of the shopping centre to place a two metre wide gold star on the giant tree.

At 18 metres tall it is believed to be the largest in Northern Ireland.

It is the focal point of Victoria Square's Christmas lights switch-on which takes place today at 6:15pm.

Meanwhile a German ‘American Indian’ will be one of the draws at Belfast’s Christmas Continental Market which is on its way back to the city.

Big Chief Roland Olarte may be German but he lives his life and follows the beliefs of the native American Indians — right down to living in a wigwam which also serves as his stall.

Allan Hartwell, director of Marketplace Europe who organise the market for the city council, said: “The chief’s stall is certainly unique, selling a range of American Indian crafts, T-shirts, jewellery, head dresses — and, most unusually, didgeridoos.”

The market will open as the lights on the Christmas Tree outside City Hall are switched on next Wednesday and remain open until Saturday, December 20.

Hey guys, what's the 'city hall' tree got to do with the one in Victoria Square??

The story is about Victoria Square!

You are wrong about the City Hall tree, it is donated by the same anonymous group each year. The Tree outside the City Hall is also sourced within the UK to limit the eniromental impact!

I could be wrong, but I believe the tree at the city hall was always a gift from Norway. I guess the bigger issue might be "how environmentally friendly is it to transport Christmas trees from other countries rather than use home-grown ones". But then again we do this every day with fruit, veg etc that we buy from the supermarket

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
