Oh, what a circus!

French-Canadian troupe promises spectacular show

The circus is in town: Cirque Du Soleil will push the limits of arena performance this weekend with their innovative show, Delirium

French Canadian entertainment empire Cirque Du Soleil will push the limits of arena performance this weekend with their innovative show, Delirium, at the Odyssey in Belfast.

Cirque Du Soleil has extended its European tour to include two Northern Irish dates after unprecedented success throughout the Continent.

The unique multi-media extravaganza Delirium has already sold out 25 cities in 13 European countries.

The shows, which will take place tonight and tomorrow, feature former Olympian gymnast Mary Sanders, a three-time USA champion who represented Canada in Athens in 2004.

Sanders will be joined by 35 dancers, contortionists, stilt artists and more traditional circus performers.

A spokeswoman for the production team behind the spectacle said Ulster audiences would be treated to an amazing night of entertainment.

She said: "The extraordinary show is set to music played by a live band. Even the musicians are prone to some acrobatics - at one point in the show a Brazilian vocalist is suspended high in the air and her skirt becomes a tent in which other acrobats perform death defying stunts."

Cirque Du Soleil specialises in presenting its own art form, developed over 20 years of street performance and travelling productions. The unique style of entertainment has enthralled over 70 million spectators since the artists formed back in 1984.

Each show combines various circus styles from around the world and has its own theme and storyline.

Music plays continuously; acrobats dance wildly; performers change their own props and there are no curtains to separate the crowd from the dynamic musicians.

The spokeswoman said: Delirium promises to be the most captivating Cirque Du Soleil performance to date. Driven by an urban tribal beat and awe-inspiring visuals, musicians, singers and dancers aim to transform the Odyssey arena into a state of joyous frenzy. Far from a standard touring circus show, Delirium is a vast theatrical and multimedia production designed specifically to fill the space an arena offers."

Created by the award-winning Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, Delirium is inspired by how the music and movement onstage interact with state-of-the- art multi-media projections. The result is a musical and visual masterpiece.

Tickets cost £49/£60 and are on sale at www.cirquedusoleil.com, www.ticketmaster.ie or through the Odyssey Arena Box Office on 02890739074.
