An old landmark linen factory beside the River Bann in Co Armagh is being demolished to make way for a 153 homes and a riverside park.
The former Hamilton Robb factory in Portadown — now owned by R.A. Irwin’s — was built 150 years ago during the linen boom, but has been under-occupied for years.
Irwin’s are planning to move out to a purpose-built factory, having applied for planning permission for 82 apartments, 55 houses and a linear park on the banks of the river. A spokesman said just 25 staff occupied the spacious factory where 500 once worked when linen was sought-after throughout the world.
Local MP David Simpson welcomed the plan. “The factory is in the run-down Edenderry area of Portadown and this is just the boost it required,” he said.
