Omagh bomb legal victory: Landmark case has set a ‘precedent’
Tuesday, 9 June 2009
The Omagh bomb judgment will open the way for the families of those killed in the 7/7 outrage to sue for damages, the lawyer who built the case against the Real IRA bombers has said.
Jason McCue, the solicitor who masterminded the Omagh families’ legal bid, said the ruling had set a precedent for other victims of terrorism. He said he was sure those caught up in the July 2005 attacks on London would now seek damages from those who allegedly helped plan the suicide attacks.
“7/7 want to do an action,” he said outside Belfast High Court after the ruling. “They are definitely going to because they’ve seen the consequences.”
The authorities believe as many as 20 people were involved in planning the attacks, which claimed 52 lives.
