Thousands of people across the province are being urged to pick up a camera for one day and help create a photographic time capsule of a Northern Ireland summer for a new competition.
‘One Summer’s Day’ was launched today by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB).
The difference, however, is that all photographs must be taken in Northern Ireland on Saturday, June 19.
The results will offer an historic snapshot of all aspects of life in the province on that one day.
Belfast Telegraph picture editor Gerry Fitzgerald said the idea behind the competition is for as many people as possible to capture a place in Northern Ireland that is special to them.
“The photograph should be of a particular place that means something to you, for whatever reason, which we will ask entrants to specify,” Gerry said.
“It may involve people or pets, it may be an action shot, or it may just be a beautiful scenic photograph. It’s really up to you.
“Hopefully, when we collate all the entries, we will have a unique snapshot, or photographic time capsule, of how Northern Ireland looked and what people were doing on one summer’s day in 2010,” he added.
Pauline Gormley of the NITB said the province has “many hidden delights”.
“As a nation, we are very proud of where we come from and this competition gives everyone in the country an opportunity to show why Northern Ireland is special and what it means to them individually,” she said.
Competition entries will be split into three categories — one for primary school children, one for secondary school children, and a third category for everyone else.
Everyone will have the opportunity to have their photograph featured in the Belfast Telegraph website’s picture gallery or on NITB’s website www.discovernorthernireland.com.
Mr Fitzgerald added that the key ingredient for entries should be content rather than picture quality.
“It doesn’t matter if you’ve taken the photograph on your mobile phone or an expensive digital camera.
“This competition is about choosing the right place at the right time and capturing a moment. It’s all about picture content rather than picture quality and we will be taking into account how every photograph was taken.”
In the run-up to June 19, the Belfast Telegraph and NITB are also asking people to tell them where in Northern Ireland they would like to photograph and why.

How to Enter
All ‘One Summer’s Day’ photographic entries have to be taken in Northern Ireland on Saturday, June 19.
The aim is to offer a snapshot of how Northern Ireland looked and what people were doing on one summer’s day in 2010.
Winners of each category will receive a family break in Northern Ireland. The top 100 photographs will be included in a supplement.
Photographs should be sent, via email, to onesummersday@belfasttelegraph.co.uk with a short note explaining the content of the picture and what makes it so special by June 30.
