The widow of a policeman murdered by dissidents, a “mum in a million” and a sign-language teacher with 20 years experience were among the inspirational women honoured at a major Belfast Telegraph gala dinner.
A selection of our most outstanding people were out in glamorous force to celebrate the achievements of women in 10 categories including business, fashion, sport, education, health and family life at the Belfast Telegraph Woman of the Year Awards in association with Spar.
Kate Carroll, whose husband Stephen was the first PSNI officer to die at the hands of terrorists, took the top accolade and was honoured with the title of BT Woman of the Year in association with Spar. The judges were swayed by her dignity, courage and grace in the face of great personal tragedy. She was also named Inspirational Woman of the Year.
Described as a truly devoted “mum in a million”, Loretta Wilson was the very worthy winner of our Mum of the Year award 2009. Since her world was turned upside down this year following the devastating news that her 22-year-old daughter Bronagh had a terminal brain tumour, she has relentlessly focused her efforts on caring for her daughter and grandchildren.
Elizabeth McAughtry, the winner of the BT Woman of the Year in Education, has taught British Sign Language in schools, colleges and other organisations for 20 years. Profoundly deaf since birth, her colleagues highlighted how her work has enabled thousands of students to get academic qualifications.
Telegraph editor Mike Gilson said: “To listen to all of the women's stories of courage, innovation and inspiration was a humbling experience. It has simply been a privilege for us to be able to shine a much deserved spotlight on the great but often unsung women of Northern Ireland.”
And Brenda Mulligan, brand marketing controller, Henderson Group (owners of SPAR franchise locally), said: “As always, the BT Woman of the Year Awards culminated in a wonderful event, with a fantastic gathering of local guests, first class entertainment and, most importantly, very worthy winners.”
The night was compered by BBC Radio Ulster presenter Wendy Austin.
