Petrol price falls to 88.9p per litre

By Matthew McCreary
Tuesday, 2 December 2008

Petrol and diesel have hit their lowest prices for more than a year and a half as the supermarket fuel price war continued to hot up today.

The latest price drop kicked off after retail giant Asda announced yet another cut in its pump rates.

The store, which operates seven forecourts in Northern Ireland, announced it will be dropping its unleaded petrol by a penny to 88.9p per litre.

Its diesel rates will also be cut by 2p, to 102.9p per litre.

The supermarket said this is the first time since March 2007 that prices have been this low. It is the eleventh cut in fuel prices they have made since July this year.

It is now expected that rival supermarket chains Tesco and Sainsbury’s will lower their fuel prices in line with Asda, as they have done on previous occasions.

Asda said that falling world oil costs had allowed the cuts to be made. The new price will be effective from this morning.

Whatever way you look at it the oil countries have us by the throat. they can produce more and the price drops. they switch off the tap and the price rises. We're beat!

John, Does that mean you go to a different store for your fruit, toiletries, household items etc depending on where each is cheapest? You'd be pretty busy travelling around. You are also rewarded in Tesco with 5p off if you spend £50 which most households would easily spend on a shop each week.

Motorists should use ASDA as much as possible. After all its always they who drop their prices first. Why do Tesco and Sainsbury have to wait for ASDA to reduce fuel prices before they do likewise? The public should remember this before they fill their tanks or go to a particular supermarket.
