Liam Adams is coming under increasing pressure to hand himself in to police and answer allegations of child sex abuse. The younger brother of Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams is wanted by police in Northern Ireland to face 23 charges of rape and abuse against his daughter between 1978 and 1983.

He has been on the run since last November when a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to turn up to a preliminary court hearing to answer questions about alleged sexual offences against his daughter.

Last week Aine Tyrell, now 36 years old and a mother of two, waived her right to anonymity and spoke publicly about the allegations against her father.

In an interview with UTV’s Insight programme, she said: “My first memory of it, I know it wasn’t the first time it had happened so I don’t know what age I was, but I think the first time I do remember it happening was when I was four.”

She said many of the attacks happened after Mr Adams had attacked her mother, Sally Campbell, in a drunken rage.

“Oh I knew it was gonna happen, every time. I just did, it was just an instinct or because it had happened so many times that you just knew,” she said.

The abuse stopped after eight painful years and Liam, a former IRA man, was exiled to Donegal.

Aine did not see her father for three years but after the death of her maternal grandmother in 1985, she and her siblings faced a stay with their estranged father at his Donegal home.

It was at this time she discovered he had married his second wife Bronagh in Dundalk and had started a new family. She knew then she had to speak out.

She said: “When I got there and realised that there was a new child in the house, a wee girl in the house, living there permanently, I was devastated, absolutely devastated.”

Aine wrote her mother a note claiming her father had been forcing her to sleep with him.

Last week Gerry Adams made a public appeal for his brother to hand himself over to the police.
