Vandals who cut down several metal lampposts leaving electric cables exposed in Londonderry have been branded “irresponsible and reckless”.
Police are investigating the incident at the Lecky Road flyover in the Bogside/Brandywell area yesterday morning. The vandalism comes just days after six-year-old Tia Nagurski died from possible electrocution after coming into contact with electric cables while playing near her Ballymagroarty home.
A spokesperson for the Department for Regional Development said yesterday: “On Monday morning Roads Service was alerted to the whereabouts of three damaged lampposts. Immediately two engineers responded and went to the site to minimise any potential safety hazards. It was fortunate no-one, including the perpetrators, were seriously injured.”
The DRD spokesperson said two of the poles had been broken and were hanging over the flyover and could have fallen on passers-by. Part of the third lamppost was found on the other side of the road.
