Republic boss Giovanni Trapattoni’s dream Vatican job

Giovanni Trapattoni has admitted that he'd love to manage the Pope's favourite football team when he finishes his stint as Republic of Ireland boss.

The Italian revealed that he would love to coach the Vatican City football team one day.

Trapattoni said that he has already been asked to coach the team several times and was forced to turn it down due to other work commitments.

“I have been asked to coach the Vatican national side, but I am currently working for Ireland,” he said. “But when I retire then I would like to.”

Although the Vatican City side is not a Fifa member, players compete at religious tournaments and some internationals.

The Vatican City team consists primarily of members of the Swiss Guard and members of the Papal Council.
