More than four million cigarettes have been seized by customs officers at Dublin Port.
The contraband cigarettes, which have an estimated retail value of two million euro, were discovered among freight which arrived from China via Holland.
A Revenue spokeswoman said a man in his 30s from Northern Ireland was arrested, charged with evasion of excise duty and remanded in custody in relation to the find.
The haul of Raquel and Gold Classic brands - which would have cost the exchequer 1.8 million euro in revenue - had been described on the manifest as pharmaceuticals
A truck was also seized during the operation.
Investigations are ongoing.
