79 new jobs at medical devices firm

Richard Bruton hailed the expansion of VistaMed's research and manufacturing facilities in Leitrim

A medical devices firm is to create 79 jobs in Leitrim as it almost doubles its workforce.

VistaMed is to expand its research and development activities and manufacturing facilities in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The multimillion-euro investment was supported by the Government through Enterprise Ireland.

VistaMed designs, develops and manufactures complex catheters and complimentary medical devices. It has two bases in Carrick-on-Shannon and Rooskey.

Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation minister Richard Bruton announced the 7.2 million euro investment and described the jobs as vital.

"However, this is also a significant day for the Irish economy," he said.

"As I have said before, in order to create the jobs we so badly need we must not only deliver high levels of multinational investment, but also create an indigenous engine of growth by driving a step-change in the performance of our domestic exporters.

"Indigenous exports provide three times more benefit to the Irish economy than multinational exports."
