A Sligo pensioner who died after being assaulted during a violent burglary may have lain injured for two days

A Sligo pensioner who died after being assaulted during a violent burglary may have lain injured for two days before he was found.

Eugene Gillespie, 68, was discovered still alive in his home on Old Market Street on Friday night.

It is understood he was tied up.

The former shopkeeper was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he died later.

Mr Gillespie was a vintage car enthusiast and took a lead role in organising rallies in the area.

He was an active member of the Connacht Veteran and Vintage Motor Club.

His home on Old Market Street is less than 100 metres from the town's Garda station.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out.

Gardai believe Mr Gillespie was attacked during an aggravated burglary some time between 9pm on Wednesday night and Friday night.

They have asked anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Old Market Street area during this time frame to contact them.
