Death crash car 'driven wrong way'

A pensioner was killed when two cars collided at Harpers Island, Carrigtwohill, Co Cork

A car involved in a fatal crash may have been travelling the wrong way down a road, gardai have said.

A pensioner was killed when two cars collided at Harpers Island, Carrigtwohill, Co Cork, at about 11.40am on Tuesday.

A Garda spokesman said it appeared from initial investigations that a wine-coloured Seat Ibiza drove in the wrong direction on the west-bound lane of the N25 in the direction of Cork city and then collided with a red Subaru Impreza, which was travelling west-bound towards Carrigtwohill.

The driver of the Seat, a man aged in his early 80s, was killed.

The 32-year-old male driver of the Subaru suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
