Gardai said the man was detained following the search of a house in the Tallaght area of Dublin at lunchtime on Wednesday.
He was being held under anti-terrorism laws, section 30 of the Offences against the State Act 1939, at Ashbourne Garda Station.
Gardai said they recovered the component parts of a handgun during the search.
