An expat who operates a hostel in Queensland, Australia has hit out at backpackers from his homeland for giving the Irish a bad reputation.
And he has banned them from staying at his Main Street Backpackers pub.
Thomas Dunne who has been living in Australia for 25 years told the Irish Daily Star that badly behaved Irish backpackers have vandalised his premises, forcing him to call the police and have them arrested.
And this was not the first time the father of three has dealt with his troublesome natives as he revealed that past guests have also caused mayhem at his hostel.
“The Irish are the only ones to have caused deliberate damage.
"This year we have had Irish backpackers. It’s only the start of the season and already some have been thrown out...we can’t tar everyone with the same brush but we have had enough of Irish backpackers,” he said.
Mr Dunne went on to say that other nationalities living in Australia who provide accommodation services feel the same. “It reflects badly on us as we have to live up here,” he continued.
Police down under have threatened to deport Irish backpackers who embark on a rampage of anti-social behaviour which was revealed in an email forwarded to an Aussie-based GAA Club. “...please spread the word to your fellow Irish, as this is affecting all our reputations here, not only the people who are causing the trouble,” stated the email.
