Grandmother dies in freak accident

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the freak accident to come forward

A grandmother has died in a freak traffic accident in Co Clare.

The 74-year-old was loading shopping into the back of her parked car in Ennis when it reversed over her.

It is understood the woman's young grandson was in the car at the time and gardai are investigating how the vehicle started.

The victim's granddaughter is also believed to have been with her when the tragic incident happened on Francis Street around 1.40pm.

Neither child was hurt.

The area is close to two supermarkets and was busy with Sunday shoppers when the collision happened.

Emergency crews tried to save the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has been brought to Limerick Regional Hospital.

The road has been closed to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
