An Irish businessman has met with the US Vice President Joe Biden to discuss new gun technology which could prevent mass shootings and make America a safer country.

Triggersmart Technology -- owned by entrepreneur Robert McNamara who is based in Dubai but from Rathkeale, Co Limerick -- works by radio frequency and makes it impossible for anyone, other than the authorised gun owner, to pull the weapon's trigger.

He has developed the technology in conjunction with Georgia Tech in Athlone.

Mr McNamara visited the White House last Friday and met Mr Biden and the US Attorney General Eric Holder.

His company is to meet with White House officials again in the coming weeks to try and finalise a deal to roll out the technology across the States.

The debate over gun laws re-erupted after the Sandy Hook killings in November when Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six teachers in Connecticut.
