Keane's gesture for tragic Republic fan James

The captain of the Irish football team has paid a poignant tribute in America to tragic fan James Nolan who drowned in Poland, while visiting the country to watch Ireland in their Europ 2012 matches.

After scoring a goal for his LA Galaxy team, he held up a jersey which bore the message “RIP James Nolan”, according to the Irish Daily Mail.

James was a 21-year-old student from Blessington in Co Wicklow and on Friday, his remains were returned to his heartbroken family ahead of his funeral Mass today.

Keane, 31, who is expected to send the football jersey to James’ grieving family, said: “Obviously the whole country was sad and I called his father today to send my condolences and to say my thoughts were with him and the family.”
