An Irish property developer who was allegedly kidnapped for eight months has been released from police custody.

Kevin McGeever was questioned for 24 hours on suspicion of wasting Garda time.

A Garda spokesman said that a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The 68-year-old former tycoon was emaciated and disorientated when found wandering barefoot on the side of the road near the Cavan-Leitrim border on January 29 this year.

He was arrested at his Craughwell home in Co Galway on Thursday and held at Gort Garda station, the same station where he was reported missing by his partner last June.

Mr McGeever, who is originally from Swinford, Co Mayo, had a long beard, hair and nails and was treated for malnutrition when he was found by a motorist in a dishevelled state.

His story attracted global publicity in January when he was found.

He claimed to have been abducted by masked men who threatened to kill him unless a ransom was paid.

Mr McGeever claimed his captors put a gun to his forehead and told him he had only two days left to live.

But as details emerged of his colourful and complicated business life, and the police struggled to trace his captors, doubts began to grow. Now the Irish authorities appear to suspect there is less to the abduction tale than meets the eye, after arresting the flamboyant developer at his sprawling mansion near Galway city.

He was held for questioning under legislation which encompasses offences including wasting police time and false allegations.

It has emerged that in the past he has been sought by various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and police in Germany and the Far East, who were investigating fraud.

His reappearance in January sparked speculation that he had been held for ransom by criminals, republicans, or even the Russian mafia.

Mr McGeever ran a development company dealing with properties in Dubai and the US, and had an extravagant lifestyle.
