Landing pilot is targeted by laser

Police in the Republic are investigating a laser attack on an airline pilot as he tried to land his aircraft during a snow storm.

The pilot of Sunday night's Loganair flight from Dublin to Donegal was forced to circle above the rural airport after being targeted, gardai said.

Three crew members and 18 passengers were on board flight BE6976 when the incident happened above the airport in Carrickfin, in the west of the county.

"The laser was observed by the flight crew as it approached Donegal, and they reported it to air traffic control, who passed on the information to the gardai," a Loganair spokesman said.

"The incident took place during a critical phase of the flight when pilots are completing pre-landing checks and monitoring weather conditions."

The spokesman added: "Successful prosecutions have been brought for similar offences."

Gardai in Bunbeg are investigating the incident.
