A man has been charged with the murder of an Irish backpacker who died in Melbourne following an alleged hammer attack.
David Greene died in hospital last Friday after nearly two weeks in intensive care.
The 30-year-old and his friend David Byas, both from Cabinteely in Dublin, were injured in an alleged assault in the Australian city on August 26.
Victoria Police initially charged suspect Luke James Wentholt, from St Kilda East, with assault.
A police spokeswoman said: "Investigators have today upgraded the charge to murder and the man will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this afternoon."
Mr Greene and Mr Byas, who is recovering in a rehabilitation centre, were assaulted at a boarding house in Lynedoch Avenue, St Kilda East, in Melbourne, on August 26.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has been providing consular assistance to both their families.
Mr Greene was described last week as a precious and much-loved son by his parents Aidan and Catherine and his brothers Luke and Aidan, who held a vigil by his bedside in Australia.
