Man held after cash hold-up chase

Garda officers have appealed for witnesses over a heist in Clondalkin, west Dublin

Garda officers have recovered 50,000 euro and arrested a suspect after chasing robbers caught in the act of a heist.

Two men - armed with either a real or imitation handgun - held up a cash delivery worker at a post office at Bawnogue Shopping Centre in Clondalkin, west Dublin.

After seizing the cash, they tried to make their getaway in a waiting Hyundai Santa Fe SUV being driven by an accomplice at around 11.20am.

But two Garda officers passing by on patrol spotted the SUV speeding out of the car park and chased it around 1.2 miles to Kilmahuddrick.

The gang abandoned the Hyundai, 50,000 euro in stolen cash and the handgun before fleeing the scene on foot.

However, the gardai were able to catch one of the suspects who was arrested at the scene.

The man, in his 30s, is being held at Clondalkin Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Investigators have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
