A man has been charged with possession of explosives and IRA membership after a car carrying a suspect bomb was found parked outside a country house hotel.

Samuel Devlin, 55, whose address was given as the Golf Suite at the Finnstown House Hotel, Lucan, Co Dublin where the device was discovered on Saturday night, appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

Devlin, who is originally from Northern Ireland, was arrested early on Sunday morning.

Gardai and bomb squad officers had been called to Finnstown House, several miles from the city centre, where a wedding had been taking place.

The device was discovered in a Northern Ireland registered car parked in the grounds.

The charges Devlin faces state that the device contained pentaerythritol tetranitrate, a highly explosive substance.

The wedding guests in the hotel had to be evacuated from the building after the discovery was made and sent to a local pub to continue celebrations.

It is understood the material suspected of being used for a bomb was concealed in a beer keg in a black VW Passat.

Devlin was remanded in custody by the three judge non-jury Special Criminal Court until June 3.
