Minister hails boxing successes

Joe Ward brought home a bronze medal from the world championships in Kazakhstan

A boxer who won a silver medal in the world championships in Kazakhstan should be proud, the sports minister has said.

Michael Ring congratulated Jason Quigley on his achievement.

Quigley, from Finn Valley Boxing Club, has been funded through the Irish Sports Council since 2008.

"I am sure Jason will be disappointed now, but for him to be coming back with a silver medal is a great achievement and something we should all be proud of him for," Mr Ring said.

"It's a great achievement to be the first Irish male boxer to compete in a world championship final and I'm sure Jason will be adding more medals in the future."

Mr Ring also praised Joe Ward on bringing home the bronze medal.

Ward, from Moate Boxing Club, has been funded through the Irish Sports Council since 2009.

"I know Joe would have loved to bring home gold but to be adding a world bronze medal to his gold in the Europeans and the world youths is a great achievement for the young man," he added.

"I am sure all our boxers will be working hard to ensure more success for Ireland come Rio 2016."
