Minister hails 'great' Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis collected his third Best Actor Oscar for Lincoln

Irish Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan has paid tribute to record-breaking Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis after he picked up his third Academy Award.

The actor, who lives in Wicklow, became the first man to be named best actor three times following his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln.

Mr Deenihan said he was a man of remarkable talents, by any standard.

"A third Oscar triumph - each marking very distinct, demanding and complex roles across 24 years - is an extraordinary achievement," the minister said.

"We are privileged to see this great artist at the height of his powers, and his place in the Movie Hall of Fame is now absolutely without peer,"

Mr Deenihan also congratulated two other nominees who were unsuccessful at the awards night.

Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly was shortlisted for her short film Head Over Heels, while renowned cinematographer Seamus McGarvey was nominated for a second occasion, this time for his work on Anna Karenina.
