A 75-year-old woman has died after being hit by a Garda car.

The pensioner was walking at the junction of Fonthill Road and St John's Road in Clondalkin, Dublin, when she was struck by the marked patrol car.

An investigation into the death has been taken over by the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission.

The watchdog said the accident happened shortly before 11.30am today and the woman was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where she later died.

A team of investigators from the ombudsman's office carried out examinations at the scene and a nyone with information is asked to contact them.
