Olympic torch route to cover Dublin

The Olympic flame is set to travel to Ireland ahead of London 2012

The Taoiseach has welcomed the news that the Olympic flame will travel to Ireland ahead of the London 2012 Games.

Enda Kenny said the Olympic Torch Relay coming to Dublin will put the country centre-stage in the immediate run-up to the games.

He said: "This brings even closer to home the spirit of the Olympic Games, which is being hosted by our near neighbours in London next year."

It will be a break with tradition allowing the flame to leave the host country but the International Olympic Committee is expected to sign off on plans to take the torch to Dublin on June 6.

It is understood organisers are planning a major mid-morning city centre celebration to mark the historic event.

Tourism chiefs say the Irish capital and island of Ireland will be showcased to a global audience of four billion people.

Michael Ring, junior minister for tourism and sport, said: "This is also tremendous news from a tourism perspective.

"This year we had the highly successful visits of Queen Elizabeth and President Obama, and today's announcement means that we will again have an opportunity for significant international media focus on Ireland next summer."
