Police in appeal over missing woman

Australian police are concerned for the safety of an Irish woman who went missing after a night out in Melbourne

The husband of an Irish woman who disappeared in Australia after a night out with work colleagues fears she has come to harm.

Police in Melbourne said they are also concerned for the safety of Jill Meagher, from Drogheda, Co Louth.

The 29-year-old, who has lived in Australia for three years, was last seen leaving a bar in the Brunswick area of the city in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mrs Meagher, who works for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), lives with her husband Thomas a short distance from Bar Etiquette, where she was socialising.

Dubliner Mr Meagher said he was "freaking out".

"We've checked with all the hospitals, but I think that someone has done something to her," he told the Australian Press.

"I fear that because it's not something she would do without contacting anybody.

"It's just really, really strange and I just think something must have happened...I'm absolutely freaking out. I just wish I knew where she was."

Mrs Meagher's disappearance has sparked a huge social media campaign to find her, with well-known presenters from ABC helping to spread the message.

Detective Acting Sergeant Steve Bull, of Victoria Police, is leading the investigation into her disappearance. "We just have concerns at the fact this is totally out of character for Jillian and we just haven't been able to find her at this stage," he said.
