Police probe mother and girl murder

A woman and child have been found dead at a house in Co Kerry

A Garda investigation is under way after the violent death of a mother and daughter in their home.

The pair were found dead on Sunday evening in their house in an estate just outside Killorglin, Co Kerry.

The mother, aged 27 and originally from Lithuania, was found dead in a room downstairs and the eight-year-old daughter was in an upstairs bedroom.

It is understood both of them had suffered stab wounds.

The mother had been living in Ireland for several years and working locally.

A Garda spokesman said the discovery was made at about 8.30pm on Sunday at a semi-detached house at Langford Downs. It is understood the alarm was raised after someone called to the home.

The estate is a modern, privately-built residential development about half a mile from Killorglin town centre.

The house was sealed off for a technical examination and the office of the State Pathologist was called in to conduct initial technical inspections at the scene.

Patrick Connor-Scarteen, a local Fine Gael councillor, said everyone in the town is shocked by what happened.

"It's a tragedy in such a quiet town. It's horrific to hear of such a thing," he said.
