A post-mortem showed Donegal pensioner Seamus Doherty died in suspicious circumstances

A murder probe has been launched by gardai investigating the suspicious death of a pensioner in Donegal.

Seamus Doherty, 67, died in a house at Drumacnoo near the village of Churchill in the early hours of Sunday.

A garda spokesman said he was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Letterkenny Hospital.

"Following a post-mortem examination carried out by the state pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy on the 19th June, it was established that Mr Doherty had died in suspicious circumstances," he said.

"An incident room has been set up at Letterkenny Garda Station and gardai have begun a murder investigation.

"The scene remains preserved pending a full forensic and technical examination."
