Raider forces OAP to cash machine

Gardai are investigating after a pensioner was assaulted and forced to go to a bank machine for cash

A pensioner was assaulted in his home and forced to go to a bank machine for cash in the early hours of the morning.

The 80-year-old was attacked at his house in Jubilee Street, Ballinasloe, Co Galway, at about 2am on Saturday.

A garda spokesman said the raider made the man go with him to a bank machine on Dunlo Street, where he tried to force the victim to withdraw cash.

A member of the public who was passing by intervened and the raider ran away. The victim was taken to Portiuncula Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and has since been released.

Gardai later arrested a suspect in his 20s but have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He is being questioned at Ballinasloe Garda Station, where he can be held for up to 24 hours under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
