A helicopter is involved in a major search operation for a missing fishing boat with two men on board

A major search operation is under way for a missing fishing boat with two men on board.

The alarm was raised at about 6.30pm on Friday when the vessel failed to return back to Skerries in north Co Dublin.

A spokesman for the Irish Coast Guard said debris had been found between Rockabill lighthouse and Skerries Islands which is believed to have been from the 18ft boat.

It is understood two local men, aged in their 20s and 40s, were on the lobster boat when it left the harbour at around 11am.

The rescue helicopter from Dublin Airport and RNLI crews from Skerries, Howth and Clogherhead were searching the area.
