Stargazers warned to watch the road

Stargazers travelling to see the Northern Lights in Co Donegal have been warned to keep their eyes on the road.

The AA warned motorists not to be tempted to view the displays while driving and "to keep their eyes on the road and not the sky".

Thousands of people from all over Ireland have converged on the Inishowen and Fanad Peninsulas in Co Donegal, where spectacular displays of the Aurora lights have been on display in recent days.

Clear skies over north Donegal last night once again drew hundreds of people to Malin Head, and Kathleen Gill of Inishowen Tourism says the Northern Lights have brought a great early season boost to tourism.

But Ms Gill echoed the warning from AA Ireland.

"We are asking people to enjoy the lights by all means but we also want to be careful on the roads here," she said.
