Detectives are investigating the death of a teenager in a car crash involving a stolen BMW.

The 18-year-old died when the car he was driving crashed into a wall on the Birr Road in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, at around 1.55 am.

A 16-year-old boy who was also travelling in the car at the time remains seriously ill in hospital.

No other car was involved in the collision.

Investigating gardai said they were seeking witnesses.

They want anyone who saw the black BMW after it was taken from a compound at Brosna, Birr Co Offaly, to come forward.

It is believed the car was taken between 1am and 1.40am this morning.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene while the 16-year-old was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where his injuries are described as serious.
