Two women have been killed in a road crash in Co Carlow.

The accident involving a car and a minibus happened at Rathwade Cross, Bagnalstown, at about 3.30pm.

The women, aged in their 50s and 70s, were travelling in the car and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two children who were also in the car have been taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The male driver and a female passenger of the minibus, who are believed to be in their late 40s and early 50s, have also been taken to St Luke's. Their condition is not known at this stage.

A garda spokesman said the road had been closed to allow an examination at the scene by specialist forensic collection investigators.

Diversions have been put in place.
