U2 bassist Adam Clayton has married his Brazilian girlfriend during a low-key ceremony in Dublin.

The couple tied the knot in front of a small group of friends and relatives in a registry office, and then staged a private celebration in the capital.

Clayton, 53, has been in a relationship with Mariana Teixeira De Carvalho for several years.

Among the guests was U2 bandmate The Edge, but frontman Bono was reportedly not at the celebrations.

A spokesperson for Clayton said: "Adam Clayton is delighted to confirm that he married Mariana De Carvalho today in Dublin."

The ceremony took place at the Civil Registration Service offices on Lower Grand Canal Street in central Dublin.

Clayton was previously engaged to supermodel Naomi Campbell and he had a long relationship with Suzanne Smith before the pair broke up 2007.

On Monday, the couple attended the funeral of Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney together in Donnybrook Church.
