A woman has died after she was stabbed while working in a shop.
The woman in her late 20s was attacked in a store in the Market Cross shopping centre in Kilkenny city last night.
A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder shortly after. Gardai said the attack occurred at 8.30pm.
The woman was taken to St Luke's Hospital in the city where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The arrested man was being held at Kilkenny Garda station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
Part of the shopping centre where the attack occurred has been preserved for a technical and forensic examination. It is understood CCTV from around the time of the incident is also to be examined. Gardai said investigations are ongoing.
The dead woman has been named locally as Mairead Moran, who was from the village of Kilmoganny in Co Kilkenny.
It is understood the arrested man fled the shopping centre after the attack and was later detained after getting a taxi from the city centre.
Later, a spokeswoman for the Market Cross shopping centre said the management team were supporting gardai, who spent several hours on site.
"Market Cross are co-operating with the gardai in their investigation," the spokeswoman said.
"Obviously we are all shocked at the events at the shopping centre."
The shopping centre has remained closed throughout the morning as forensic teams carried out inspections.
