Resignation of Bishop Magee is welcomed by alleged victim

One of the alleged victims of clerical abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne has welcomed the resignation of Bishop Dr John Magee.

However, the victim said the resignation of the Newry-born bishop will not draw a line under the hurt that was caused by the diocese's mishandling of abuse allegations over more than a decade.

Dr Magee — a former private secretary to three Pontiffs — resigned last Wednesday over the mishandling of abuse allegations against the clerics in the diocese. Pope Benedict XVI last week accepted Dr Magee's March 9 resignation from the diocese which he has led since 1987.

A victim of alleged abuse in Cloyne has said that while they welcome the resignation, his departure should not be the end of the matter for the diocese.

“I think he (Dr Magee) has done the right thing — but it is the clerics who betrayed him and the children in their trust who now need to be held to account,” the victim said.
