Belfast spending least on flowers

Loved-up Belfast couples will be sending each other more St Valentine's Day flowers than anywhere else in the UK, new research has revealed.

But people in the city, rated the fifth most romantic are also watching the pennies, it has been claimed.

Along with Wolverhampton, Belfast is expected to spend the least per head on bouquets, according to the flower delivery service, Flying Flowers.

Credit crunch or no credit crunch those looking to pledge their love are getting ready to pay out on chocolates, jewellery, perfume, cards, and sexy underwear.

Nearly half are planning a meal at home on Saturday night, and according to a study by Tesco, 67% of men are expecting to receive a romantic gift from their partners.

Almost eight out of 10 men claimed they would be spending as least as much as before, with 38% of them prepared to splash out over £20. Just 17% said they would be spending less than £10.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, almost half of those celebrating would prefer to eat at home - many by candlelight - rather than dine out. Over 55% would be happy to receive a home-made card.

Florists and ladies lingerie shops in the centre of Belfast reported strong sales, but staff claimed the real rush was expected on Saturday afternoon.

The Energy Trust's Patrick Thompson: "Economic doom and gloom has failed to dampen romance this St Valentine's Day. And for those determined to spread a little love, home will truly be where the heart is this year as people feeling the recessionary pinch try to save cash."
