School vandalised in rampage

Almost 50 windows were smashed and a toilet block wrecked when vandals went on the rampage at a Co Londonderry school.

Up to £5,000 worth of damage was caused to Coleraine College during the weekend attack. Breeze blocks and stones were launched at the school and a total of 47 windows were broken. Most of the damage was centred around a changing room area and a downstairs staff room.

Principal David Grainger, pictured surveying the damage, said valuable school funds would have to be diverted to pay for the repairs.

“We are not absolutely sure exactly when the damage was caused,” he said. “The alarm didn’t go off because no one actually tried to enter the building. We think it could cost somewhere between £4,000 or £5,000 to repair. This sort of vandalism means funds have to be diverted from somewhere else.”

He added: “Vandalism has been a problem in the past but we haven’t had anything for over a year now – so it is disappointing this has started again.”
