Second teenager dies after road accident
Friday, 28 November 2008
A 14-year-old girl died in hospital today after a road accident which also claimed the life of a teenage boy.
The children were walking home from school when they were hit by a car on a rural road near Florencecourt, Co Fermanagh yesterday evening.
Fifteen year-old Nathan Gault, from the town, died last night.
They were walking on the Croaghrim Road with another 15-year-old boy when the incident happened around 6.30pm.
Police investigating the accident - which was not a hit-and-run - made a renewed appeal for information from anyone who saw it or came across the scene afterwards.
SDLP Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher said news of the tragedy had devastated the people of the area.
Mr Gallagher said: "We have got to find ways of keeping people, and particularly our young people, safe on the roads."
The death came hours after the funeral of the last victim of one of the worst weekends on Northern Ireland's roads, when seven people, including four police officers, died.
Fermanagh and South Tyrone Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott said the accident was a tragedy for the families involved and for the wider community.
He said: "My sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to the families at this time. Words to describe this tragedy are almost impossible to find.
"Nothing can replace a young life like this and the heartbreak for the families must be unbearable."

This is absolutely horrible. A living nightmare. God help all the families involved.
Would putting strategically placed, (before corners or on fast stretches), speed bumps on country roads be of any use? I don't know myself -worth a try perhaps?

Some drivers don't care a hoot for pedestrians - even if they are wearing reflective clothing.
My dog and I take our lives in our paws and hands when road walking.
A greater police presence on minor roads, with speed guns MIGHT help, also enforcement of the NO MOBILE 'PHONE rule.
My thoughts are with the bereaved - I lost a son in an RTA some years ago and know how they feel.
