The mother of British girl Shannon Matthews has been arrested in connection with the alleged kidnap of her daughter.
Karen Matthews, 32, was arrested last night on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
The shocking development came as it emerged Shannon's alleged abductor Michael Donovan was found with his wrists slashed in his prison cell. Donovan was on remand at Leeds Prison.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police investigating the alleged abduction of a nine-year-old girl have arrested a 32-year-old woman in Dewsbury on suspicion of perverting the course of justice."
The nine-year-old went missing for 24 days in February and March before being discovered hidden in the drawer of a bed at a flat around a mile from her home in Dewsbury.
Shannon has still not been returned to her family and is being cared for by foster parents.
Last week, Ms Matthew's 22-year-old boyfriend Craig Meehan appeared in court charged with possessing indecent images of children.
