Sinn Fein leader gives statement to police
Saturday, 19 December 2009
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has made a statement to the PSNI in support of the allegations made by his niece.
Speaking on last night’s UTV Insight programme, Mr Adams said: “Well, you know, I’m against trial by media.
“I’m also conscious that I’m a witness to this case and that I’m a witness in support of Aine and against Liam, so I don’t want to get into the detail of all of this except to say that I believe Aine, that I believed Aine from the first time she spoke to me and I have had no reason to change my mind on that issue.
“The fact I have made a statement to the PSNI in support of Aine and against Liam, I think answers your question without me being caught up in sub judice or in some way if we get this into court that something I say here would prejudice the court proceedings.”
While this is the first time Mr Adams has spoken publicly about the situation, it is something he has struggled with on a personal level for many years - trying to come to terms with the accusations levelled at his brother.
He explained: “Aine in this case is the direct victim, but child abuse has a whole ripple of other victims.
“You know, for me, it’s like, you know, a permanent bereavement.”
