Six charges dropped against officer in tea kitty theft case

SIX charges of theft being brought against a Co Antrim police officer have been dropped, a court was told yesterday.

Detective Inspector Bryan Logan (45) had been accused of stealing a total of £40 from the recreation club at Antrim CID office over a five month period between December 2005 and January 2006.

The money had been kept in a small tuck box inside a fridge in the office.

However day two of his trial at Antrim Crown Court was adjourned yesterday after it emerged prosecution had decided to proceed on just three of the charges — those of allegedly stealing £5.50 on January 9, 2006; allegedly stealing £6 between January 12 and 17, 2006 and allegedly stealing £2 on January 23, 2006.

The case was adjourned after Logan’s defence team said they would be making an application to have the whole case dismissed.

The decision to withdraw some of the charges may also mean a new jury will have to be sworn in.

Logan, whose address was given as c/o Antrim PSNI station, denies all charges against him.

The experienced officer has been stationed in Coleraine, Belfast and Antrim and has investigated a number of high profile cases.

If found guilty he could face dismissal from the PSNI.

Last week the case heard how a hidden camera had been installed at the station to catch a detective allegedly stealing the cash.

Crown Prosecutor David Russell said Logan had admitted borrowing change from the kitty to play a poker machine but claimed he had always replaced any money he had taken.

During a police interview Logan said: “I did not make any secret of the fact that I took money from the fridge. Any money I took from that fridge I put back at some stage.”

It is understood Logan was suspended on full pay when the investigation was launched just over three years ago.

The jury of five women and seven men was ordered to return again today at 1pm. The defendant was released on continuing bail.

At hearing.
