Soldier pleads guilty to child porn charges

A serving British Army corporal from Shropshire in England has pleaded guilty at the crown court in Londonderry to 11 charges of making indecent images of children on dates between January 2003 and December 2004, when he was based in Ballykelly.

Sean O'Leary (33), from Madeley Close in Market Drayton, had denied the offences and was due to have gone on trial yesterday.

However, his barrister Seamus McNeill told Judge Desmond Marrinan that O'Leary wished to be re-arraigned. When the charges were put to him, O'Leary replied “guilty sir” to each one. Mr McNeill said O'Leary was a serving corporal based in Germany. “His captain is here with him. His military career is now very much in jeopardy and is probably at an end”, he said.

Judge Marrinan described the offences as very serious.

He released O'Leary on bail of £500 pending sentencing on March 25.

As part of his bail conditions O'Leary, who was placed on the sex offenders register, must return from Germany to Northern Ireland until he is sentenced.
