Special forces back in Northern Ireland
Friday, 6 March 2009
Members of the Army's special forces are back working in Northern Ireland to help gather intelligence on dissident republicans, it has been reported.
Members of the Special Reconnaissance Regiment, which has been at the forefront of the intelligence war in Afghanistan and Iraq, have returned to the province, the BBC reported last night.
They will not be on the streets, but will work behind the scenes. The regiment specialises in surveillance and intelligence gathering.
The move is a response to growing concerns about dissident republican activity.
The BBC also reported that the Army has also deployed additional bomb squad officers to Northern Ireland over recent months.

So what do Gerry, Martin and the rest of their colleagues reckon about the high level of dissident threat now? 2 more deaths, yet people still argue about trying to stop these needless acts

why should sinn fein be kicking up a fuss? these characters are supposed to be reformed and looking for peace in this country, well how can there be peace when the dissidents are hell bent on blowing the country to pieces the special forces are here to gather information on this threat and to help protect all the honest peaceful people from both communities, dont be blaming britian for this 1 the threat is from the dissident republicans

This is not covered in the Good Friday Agreement.Troop movements at a moments notice.War on terror is so broad.Send these boys to the desert to train thats where the real action is.

'Dr' J Lizardo's comments are very telling i.e. 'Cromwell's men' , 'Securocrats', and then aligning the Irish with Dissidents. What tripe. I'm Irish but I'm no dissident - people like this are dangerous with their highly charged language and sweeping inaccurate generalisations. Go back beyond Cromwell Dr Lizardo way back to the stone age where these ideas belong and just like the dinosaurs will hopefully one day be extinct. You and your ilk have nothing to offer true irish men and women get used to it because it ain't going to change my friend you simply don't have the support. You are more to be pitied.

The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the so-called dissidents for trying to stir things up. As a nationalist, I would like to congratulate these individuals for dragging us backwards. Please disappear.

Dr Lizardo......not sure if you know this but Oliver Cromwell died in 1658....it's pretty unlikely they are his men!

I for one would not support the return of the army to the streets of N.I., but I do not for a second think that this is what's happening at the moment. Perhaps we all need to get a bit of perspective on the situation here! A small number of army personnel are advising the PSNI, in response to a growing threat from dissident republicians. Considering the recent bomb found in Castlewellan I believe the threat is pretty real! And that hopefully, army advice to our police force will be for the safety and well being of both sides of the community. I know this hasn't always been the case in the past, but come on guys, times are a-changing, shouldn't we at least give them a chance? We can't live in the past forever.

Sinn Fein and the SDLP have a right to kick up a fuss.... these are some of the men/women that were involved in the killings of innocent people throughout the north.. Everyone knows that the SAS were involved in killings but could pan it off on th LVF/UVF etc

I was going to say, "Here come Cromwell's men again", but, as we all know, they've never really left Ireland, all things considered.
Is this "threat" for real or, are the Securocrats having to stir-up the pot again - to justify their useless exisitence and their bloated salaries?
It beckons the question: can street patrols, and house raids be far behind to keep "dissidents" (i.e. the Irish) in line?

Thanks Belfast Telegraph and BBC for keeping the terrorists updated. What next? Some photos of the special agents? Really useful article.

This proves two things: the PSNI/RUC are telling lies when they say republicans have no support, and that Stormont SFs policy of appeasement to the unionists has failed miserably. I voted for SF the last time. But not the next time.

sinn fein should have no problem with this at all. they are all reformed and looking for sustainable peace and this is just another step toward that. im sure none of them will come out to complain. any politician collecting a fee from the crown should not be referring to 'brit occupation' any more

I certainly support the regiment coming back. Its just so typical of sinn fein and sdlp to start kicking up a fuss. The regiment are helping the police with the increased threat from dissidents, they are not going back on the streets so why all the fuss.At the end of the day isnt it better to prevent more fatalities by letting these people do there job than just letting the dissidents cause even more mayhem than they already are.

Special forces that are so secretive and stealthy they managed to sneak into the country with only the BBC and the Bele Tele knowing about it!!

YAWN, to coin a phrase, the dogs in the streets know that SRR are operating in N ireland. They have to do the job as Sinn Fein sit on the Police Board hence have inside information on covert operations. Thats why the Army are doing the job. Come on guys at BT. Talk about stating the obvious!
